New Rochelle has always had families that could not afford to send their children to camp. But in recent years, the stresses on many parents and children have become severe. Many children are from one-parent homes. Many parents struggle to make ends meet, and some receive public assistance. More and more youngsters lives have been affected by problems of drug and alcohol abuse.
The need to relieve such stress, and provide children with a safe, happy and healthy summer respite, has never been greater. The Campership Fund is the only agency in the community that exists solely to send needy children to camp.
The Fund is now serving its second generation of children, and many of those who were loyal contributors in the past are no longer with us. As numbers of children needing assistance increase, so too, do camp costs.
HOW IT WORKS
The New Rochelle Campership Fund Inc. is a non-profit community agency that has served the children of New Rochelle for four decades without regard to race, color, sex or creed. It has provided thousands of children with camping experiences they could not otherwise afford. Both day camps and sleep-away are used.
The Fund is administered by an all-volunteer Executive Board. No salary costs are incurred. Most administrative expenses such as this web site and the annual mailing are covered by grants and sponsors. Thus all your contributions are spent on sending children to camp.
Each year allocations of funds to participating non-profit agencies are based on their requests and the success of the fund raising effort. The children are selected for full or partial camperships by the agencies based on financial need.
